Abertay University Library

Natural forms and textures provide the inspiration for this calming and mindful multifunctional learning space.

The ambition for this project designed by Gina Colley of 360 Architecture  was to create a welcoming, richer, more textured space that reflects and supports the values of the university and is attractive to staff, students and the wider community.

The Design concept was Organic objects that echo the distinctive form of the existing ‘drum’ space define a variety of routes and spaces with individual character. Each has their own field of influence creating a pleasing complexity within the overall composition, reminiscent of a Japanese Zen garden.

The Drum

The Study / Group Meeting / Event Space in the Drum is the cornerstone of the design. It is a place that is visible to the outdoors and serves as a central gathering space for a wide variety of uses.

Pop Up

The Pop Up provides a visible, purpose-built space for campaigns and charity events and, when not in use, provides another casual touchdown space within the foyer.

Waiting Area

The Waiting Area is a private cocoon-like space intended to provide those accessing counselling services privacy and comfort, avoiding exposure to the Main Entrance and foyer. It features comfortable bench seating, soft stools and a table in a space large enough for wheelchair users.
